River Forest Kitchen Remodel Wins Second Award

We introduced you to this kitchen a few months back when it won its first award, and we are happy to say that this beautiful River Forest kitchen remodel recently received a Remodeling Excellence Award from NARI Greater Chicagoland.  This makes four 2011 design awards for Normandy’s Leslie Lawrence, and we’re thrilled that Leslie will be sharing her tips for a great kitchen remodel at this Saturday’s seminar.  There are still a few spots left for “Secrets of the Ideal Kitchen” this Saturday February 4, it’s free to attend, just register by clicking here.

Master Bathroom to Luxury Spa

Sometimes the best solution to an under designed space is to start over with a fresh layout and a fresh perspective.  That’s what these Naperville homeowners and Normandy Designer Jennifer Runner, AKBD decided to do when converting their outdated master bathroom into a modern, luxury spa inspired retreat.

The existing floor plan included some unusual angles and focused on a rarely used oversized soaking tub.  The small shower was placed by the only window in the room, which compromised the homeowner’s privacy.  Flooring and shower walls were covered in white tile, which created an institutional feel, and the narrow vanity area lacked storage and proper lighting.

The first step to creating a soothing, modern master bathroom was to adjust the layout of the room.  One of the two closets was moved to an adjoining open attic space, which opened up the entry to the master bedroom.  In place of the moved closet, a large shower with multiple showerheads and recessed niche was added.  The once dominant bathtub was shifted to align with the shower, which also allowed for a bench to be added to the shower area.  The toilet room was relocated to the footprint of the old shower and an electric towel warmer was installed on the adjoining wall.  The vanity was designed for his and hers function with ample storage, and large mirrors and additional lighting were added.  A custom make-up vanity was placed next to the shower for additional storage and counter space.

The old, outdated cabinetry and fixtures were replaced with ebony stained cherry cabinetry and white marble countertops.  The slab style doors and drawers showed off the modern style of the homeowners. The chrome faucets, showerheads and cabinetry hardware contributed to a sleek and stylish look.  The floor, tub deck and shower walls were covered with honed limestone tile to create visual texture and a spa like feel.  “The unique stone tile insert along the tub and shower walls was installed to create a unique focal point while also introducing the same white marble used on the vanity countertops,” says Jennifer.  Three pendant lights were hung from the cathedral ceiling to introduce additional lighting. “The combination of calming blues and grays helps to make the new space a relaxing retreat,” says Jennifer.  “The use of these subdued tones along with the use of striking ebony and white reflected the contemporary taste of the homeowners.”

This spa inspired master bathroom transformation has attracted industry recognition as well, recently taking a First Place “Remodeling Excellence Award” from NARI Greater Chicagoland.  This is Jennifer Runner’s second award in as many years, and Jennifer will be presenting a bathroom remodeling seminar this Saturday January 28 entitled “A New Kind of Bathroom: The At-Home Spa Experience.”  The seminar is free to attend, but spaces are limited.  Further details and registration can be found by clicking here.

A New Year, A New Seminar Space

You may assume that since the Normandy staff is working on dozens of remodeling projects at any given time, the idea of remodeling our own showroom would be just an ordinary occasion.  But the steady stream of employees who stop by to “check the progress” reveals that we are just as excitable about remodeling our space as our homeowners are, and I am no exception.  I am quite excited to announce that our newly expanded seminar space is nearing completion, just in time for the first seminars of the 2012 season.

We have removed a bathroom display and consolidated two additional areas to provide a bright, open space where we will be able to comfortably accommodate 80 to 100 people at our very popular seminars.

This change will be completed in time for our first seminar of the 2012 season which takes place on January 21, the Secrets of the Ideal Kitchen.  You can see the progression of the before, during, and nearly complete in these photos.  We would love to show you the new space ourselves, so stop by if you’re in the neighborhood, or click here to register for one of our upcoming kitchen, bathroom or basement remodeling seminars.

Silver and Gold Inspiration

This year as you prepare to set your holiday table, take some inspiration from your Christmas Tree.  In this photo, you can see that Normandy Designer Heather Dalskov has incorporated the same silver and gold theme from her Christmas tree into the place settings and tablescape for her holiday meal.  This works particularly well when the tree is in close proximity to the table, but can be just as effective and beautiful even if the tree is several rooms away.

The place settings have either silver placemats with gold tone napkins or the reverse.  “There is this notion that you should not mix metals, specifically silver and gold,” says Heather. “That idea leads people avoid the combination all together.  But when they are paired deliberately, you will find that the warmth of the gold balances the crispness of the silver and the result is a glowing holiday that just sparkles.”

The silver and gold theme is evident in the ornaments on the tree, and if you look closely you will notice that the tree has a wide variety of ornament shapes and sizes.  Heather appreciates the interest and beauty that each ornament offers, and prefers these variations to trees that are dominated by a single color glass ball.  Though the sizes and colors vary, by keeping with the precious metals theme, the end result is cohesive, bright Christmas tree that truly sparkles.

If you would like more ideas on how to make the most of your Christmas tree this year, you can read about feather tree toppers, creating your own tree skirt, grouping glass ball ornaments, or adding floral picks to your tree.  You can also read more about Heather or schedule an appointment to meet with her or one of the other talented members of the Normandy Design team.
